What is vinyl cutter?
The vinyl cutter (also named cutting plotter) is a common device in the advertising industry, generally speaking, the vinyl cutter is a device which needs to be connected with the computer; receives the commands from the computer and be controlled by the computer, or you can transfer the data through USB interface, which support offline work, or you can transfer the data through USB interface, which support offline work. How to choose the suitable vinyl cutter?

1) Max cutting width
Max cutting width means the largest width to be cut horizontally. 
Width of common cutters is 45cm, 60cm, 90cm, 120cm, 150cm, etc.
The largest width is one of the most important characters deciding the value of it. The price can be increasing as geometric series. Such as the price of 90cm width cutter is 4 times of the 45cm width, not double value. The reason is that longer width means not only width adding, but also higher demanding on technology and processing art.
When buying, the users should make their decision on the cutting width according to their financial situation. Usually, 60cm width cutter will fulfill the demand of opening a common cutting store or non-professional usage. While 90cm or 120cm width cutters is the optimal choice for professional usage, such as mass production of light boxes AD factories.

2) Max. Paper Feed Width
The max paper feed width means the largest material width that the cutter can accept and use. Materials beyond the max feeding width can not be used.

As our common printing condition, we could not start to cut just from the very edge of the cutting Vinyl, because that is easy to make mistakes and not in good vision. Usually we would leave the edge space on both sides. Therefore, the max paper feed width must be wider than the max cutting width.

3) Resolution
Resolution is another important feature of cutter. High resolution means high quality. Commonly, the repeat resolution, also called positioning resolution is also important. Currently, the repeat resolution of our cutter is between 0.127mm-0.1mm

4) Cutting Speed
Cutting speed is also an important technical index and important factors deciding the prices of cutters. Different cutting speed can lead to different prices even with same brand, same max cutting width.
The unit of cutting speed is mm/s which means the cutting length of the knife on material. In the cutting procession, moving route of the knife is curved, so the length is decided by the diagonal line. For example, 450mm/s which is marked on a cutter means its knife will move 450mm length straight line.

Commonly used cutting plotter has following speed in present market: 450mm/s, 600mm/s, 800mm/s, 1200mm/s, etc. All these are their max speed. Cutters can work normally under this max speed. Usually, larger cutting letters need higher speed. Small letters should be cut under low speed to avoid fuzzy letter or disconnection. 

5) Cutter Press
Cutter press means the strength used when cutting the vinyl. There are several kinds of cutter press：200g, 350g, 400g, 500g, 800g, etc. Knife pressure means the strongest press produced. Usually, cutters with heavier pressure are better choices.

Knife pressure can be adjusted between 0 and max knife pressure according to the material being cut. For example, to cut self-adhesive vinyl needs little pressure, while imported adhesive film, especially transparent film with metal lines needs larger pressure. When aging, the cutter can not reach the max pressure usually. That is why we suggest you buy the large knife pressure cutter.

6) Interface
Interface type decides the connection mode between cutter and the computer. There are two kinds of common interfaces: parallel interface, also called IEEE1284, and series interface, also called RS-232.

Parallel interface is mainly used on printer, adopting 25 needles interface. Why is it called parallel interface? The eight digits numbers are transferred through parallel lines at the same time. Therefore, data transfer speed is improved largely. But the length is limited. There will be more disturb or mistakes as the length is added. Currently, computers are installed with parallel interface.

To nowadays PC there are two series interface usually: COM1, COM2. Data is transferred one digit by one digit. Though the speed will be slow, the transfer distance will be much further than the parallel interface. Normally, COM1 adopts 9 needles D shape linker, also called RS-232 interface, while COM2 adopts old DB25 needles linker, also called RS-422 interface, it is rarely used now.

7) Plotting instruction
Plotting instruction is orders made by computers for cutting plotter to run. It tells the cutting plotter how to move on the cutting object in order to get the accurate letters and images.

The most common order language is HPGL, which is the widely used computer drawing language and is not limited by operating system.

8) RAM
RAM is the cutting plotter's inner memory. It has two functions. First, it can rapidly realize data transfer when cutting. Second, it can help the cutting plotter work without computer's assistance. This can allow the computer to deal other things. All these features improve the working efficiency. Usually 2MB memory is necessary for a cutting plotter. 

9) Liquid crystal screen
Knife pressure and speed can be viewed on the liquid crystal screen when working, which can help adjust the pressure and the speed.
